Malai Tong

MalaiTong

Born around 1985, Malai Tong – meaning ‘Garland of Gold’ was rescued from Surin province in 2005.

Malai Tong was being used for illegal logging in the Tak province of Thailand along the Burma border, when she stepped on a landmine around 2002. Once she recovered well enough to bear weight on her foot, she was taken to work street begging in Bangkok. Due to recurring problems with her injured foot, she was brought back to Surin. Her owner could not afford the medical care needed without earning an income by working her, so he decided to sell Malai Tong.

When Malai Tong arrived to ENP. She immediately knew she wanted to take care of babies. Since her arrival she has become the park’s professional nanny – caring for more than 5 babies since her arrival. Besides her nanny skills, Malai Tong is also very good as a caretaker elephant. When not busy with Yindee she looks after her blind, older best friend Mae Jarunee who loves Malai Tong dearly.
