Mae Keow
Mae Keow was born around 1958. Her full name, Mae Keow Gala Yor, means ‘Petite green eyed lady’. She was rescued and arrived to ENP in 1998. She was the third elephant Lek rescued. Mae Keow worked in both the logging and trekking industries. When Lek first met Mae Keow, she had a baby boy. Lek did not have the funds available to rescue them both. Before she could gather the funds, the little boy was sold. When she first arrived to ENP, Mae Keow was afraid of moving around freely without chains. Thankfully with time and with the encouragement of a new friend Lily, she soon learned how to be an elephant once again. She became confident… maybe TOO confident! Mae Keow was known for tail biting and being aggressive towards other elephants, but in her last years became more passive. After her best friend, Lily, passed away in April 2011, she grew more shy and lacked the confidence she once had. RIP Mae Keow, As much as we miss you, we are glad you are reunited with your dear Lily.
