Jokia’s rescue anniversary.

Jokia was rescued and brought to Elephant Nature Park in 1999. She had suffered many years of hard labour and abuse in the logging industry.

During her working life she suffered a miscarriage while pulling a log uphill, and was not allowed to stop working to check if her calf was dead or alive. This event caused Jokia extreme physical and emotional trauma and she refused to go back to work. As a result, she was deliberately blinded.

During her time with us she forged a beautiful friendship with Mae Perm. Mae Perm acted as Jokia’s eyes always guiding her and reassuring her with her trunk. When Mae Perm passed away we were all very concerned about how Jokia could adjust to the loss of her best friend. Although it took some time Jokia is now part of Navaan’s herd.

Everyone who has the pleasure of meeting Jokia falls in love with her beautiful gentle nature. We are so happy that for the last 18 years we were able to give Jokia back the freedom and love she deserves.
