World Elephant’s day
Today is World Elephant Day(12th, August). Their lives in the Wild are gravely compromised, and in captivity so desperate. They live on the Edge of Being. Humans are virtually their sole enemy .
When their homelands are invaded and destroyed, they are victimized, labeled as a problem, a source of human conflict. So we cull them, we translocate and incarcerate them, we mount them on walls. Their body parts are commodified, becoming jewelry, medicine, fashionable artwork for the nouveau riche, and even dog meat.
The captive elephant endures the humiliation of entertaining humans in the circus, or riding or displayed as an exhibit to educate our youth that it is “OK to steal the birthright of highly sentient beings to live in peace and freedom”. Rather, they spend the rest of their days chained, beaten and broken.
For the love of money, responsibility to an elephant’s maternal instincts is disavowed by us. The mother, her body violated to produce young, is then denied the right to raise them lovingly in the company of others, their offspring sold into another servitude.
Spectres of horror we create every day. This is not a movie, but it is a Swansong. What greater tragedy to witness the passing of the most beautiful species to tread upon this fragile earth. Their dignity is intact. It is our own that is highly questionable. Can we be raised from our slumber in time to Save them ? To protect them, we must place limitations on ourselves, from our greed and desires, from human arrogance and the excessive growth of our kind.
