We don’t know the Covid-19 will last
When we think about captive elephants, one position that is vital is the Mahout. The potential of this role is so important for an elephant’s well being.
When an elephant is sick, the vet will gather much information from the mahout, and if the vet needs to provide medical treatment,
a successful job is difficult without assistance by the mahout. And generally, a mahout who looks well to the care of his animal will have established a reciprocal bond.
If we are hoping to change the lives of the elephant to be better, then the mahout is an important part of that change.
During the COVID crisis, our attention is focused on the elephant and failed business, but we should not look over this group of people who are with the elephant all of the time. Many of them, who have families to care for as well, have suffered immediate job loss.
Others, who remain with the elephants who walk back home, will be separated from their families as they follow to where ever the elephant will be.
We have followed the life of the mahout and there are many hardships that shadow them. We are trying to help the mahout also during this difficult time. We are always wanting to help both the elephant and those who should serve them well.
If you believe the way of heart to mind, then you will understand. If we have care for the elephant then it is right to show our concern toward the one who has the actual responsibility for that care. If we love the elephant, then we also have a duty toward their guardian. Many things are difficult, but the change that benefits the elephant, it must also come from us, from our heart, with sincerity and a willingness to work together.
