Passionate Pikun : The Rescue Story
Years ago Pikun made a dramatic scene as she rushed into Elephant Nature Park and was circled and protected by Fah Mai’s family. Lately, and often, she will run to hide in the herd of Kham La.
It is always sad to see her taken back. Lek, spoke with the camp’s owner several times about Pikun, and on the week of March 13, 2017 he agreed to let her go and stay with Elephant Nature Park.
The old elephant (65+ years old), Pikun, who we rescued from the tourist camp down river from Elephant Nature Park has worked at the camp as a trekking elephant for the past 4 years.
Over that time, Pikun has broken her chain many times and escaped to Elephant Nature Park property, where the mahout would have much difficulty retrieving her as she was embraced by various social groups within our Park family.
As the rescue team awaited the moment to take her to Elephant Nature Park, she was assured that she was going to have a good life. The owner released her chain, and with a sudden start, she bolted for the road and didn’t slow until she ran through our gate. Pikun knew she was home.
Thank you so much to Khun Sawanee Osathanuklaw and Khun Monreudee Yamapai, the senior Thai movie star who helped us to rescue Pikun. From today she no longer needs to escape again.
