Sao Yai
Born around 1990, Sao Yai (meaning Big Girl) was rescued from a nearby trekking camp in June 2011. Before trekking, Sao Yai worked in illegal logging and began her working life performing in elephant shows. Sao Yai has had two babies, a boy and a girl – both of whom were taken from her.
Here at ENP, Sao Yai has moved through many social groups. She is currently best friends with Mae Lanna and Medo. Sao Yai is intense, emotional and dramatic. She despises heavy machinery. Sao Yai can be unpredictable with other elephants, so she and her friends go to a quiet place away from the daily activities each day.
