Sunny
Sunny was a stray puppy born in the Thailand jungle like many dogs at Elephant Nature Park park where I worked. We caught, desexed and vaccinated him, and let him go to resume his nomad life or stay at the park, whichever he chose.
The next day I found him wagging his tail at the bottom of the wobbly steps to my bamboo hut… and it seems his choice was made! He’d sleep in my room but disappear during the day, then began to appear at my lunch table and lie at my feet, sleep outside our small animal clinic waiting for me all day, trot alongside while I walked the dogs in our clinic, wait for me outside the shower block, then lie beside my bed until we both fell asleep… and all with me trying my hardest not to bond with him because if I did both our hearts were sure to be broken – the dog import process to Australia is strict, long and expensive.
One evening in my little hut, Sunny and I rolled around on the floor playing and all of a sudden I realised I was happier than I’d been in 18months since my 16yr old akita died. I realised Sunny was healing my grief and that he had chosen me as his person, that I HAD to find a way for us to spend the rest of our lives together!
I found out if Sunny and I did a 6mnth stint in America it’d lessen the process to Australia substantially and on a whim my mum approached a Hollywood celebrity and dog rescuer while she was at a book signing in Melbourne, and she offered Sunny and I a live in volunteer job at her rescue ranch in California! We hit Australian shores on 13/8/14, exactly one year from the date we first met in Thailand 🙂
Thankyou to all the wonderful people who donated to help Sunny get to Australia and for the contact encouragement and support you gave us along the way, we couldn’t have done it without you xoxoxoxoxox
