There are so many feelings and events surrounding the adoption of Deano that it’s hard to put into a short story. I met Deano while I was volunteering with ENP in January. He was just a pup when we found him being bullied in his run. We had brought him to the clinic and from that moment, I became completely obsessed. I loved every dog at ENP but there was just something about him in particular. My partner and I flip-flopped over whether or not to adopt him (there are a lot of things to consider when you are living as an expat, especially in a country that sometimes doesn’t particularly love dogs). Unfortunately, Deano was hurt in a dog fight that tore most of his right ear. That gut wrenching helpless feeling of seeing him after that attack, that feeling, it really was what ensured me that adopting him was what we needed to do. Deano landed in Korea on June 26th. I prepared myself emotionally for the possibility that he wouldn’t remember me, but I truly believe that he did. He has been settling in fantastically. At first, he had some separation issues. But after a few weeks he was perfectly content with us leaving the house to go to work. He’s incredibly good at recognizing what is and isn’t his to chew, however he is also very good at tearing apart what is his (none of his toys last very long). He knows 4 commands already and is now working on the 5th. He still struggles with crowds of people, loud noises, and other dogs. But, I’m convinced he will tackle those issues with a little bit of patience from his parents and some time. He’s truly the love of my life (my partner knows he comes second now hehe), and I’m elated that I fell into his.
