Sanchez’s Happy Tale

AND HERE IS THE LOVELY HAPPY TALE OF SANCHEZ!! Thanks so much to Jenn and Stephan!

Back in April 2016, Jenn and I volunteered at Elephant Nature Park, and spent every spare minute lending a hand to the dog shelter, walking and socializing with all of the fuzzy friends. On our first day socializing in one of the runs, Jenn met Sanchez, and after a few face licks, that was it – love at first sight. We spent the rest of the year traveling, so it was only a little over a month ago that our new friend could come to stay with us. Though we worried that the difficulty of the flight and the dramatic change in scenery would be traumatic for the poor girl, she has handled it all in stride, proving to be incredibly adaptable. She started out in New Hampshire’s cold climate, where she decided that the snow was fine to walk in, but she didn’t appreciate it falling on her back. After three weeks in the cold, we moved to North Carolina, where she has discovered an intense love for watching (and occasionally chasing) squirrels, sprawling out in the warm sunshine, and begging for Jenn’s homemade dog treats. She finds great joy in having her belly rubbed and loves to burrow as far into your lap as she can get. Through it all, she’s been perfectly behaved. Although she is an aggressive chewer when given something tasty, she displays no interest in gnawing on household items. She’s never had an accident in the house, knows that food on tables is not for her, and she’s never been anything other than sweet to new dogs or people. We are experimenting with leaving her alone for periods of time and she has been amazing. She’s a nervous little girl, with loud noises often sending her scurrying for a safe corner, but every day she gains courage. It’s wonderful to see her get better and better at walking on the leash, confidently trotting down the sidewalk past places or noises that used to send her running. It’s funny; a big dog barking at her is never cause for concern, but a 3-year old toddler may as well be a dog-eating monster. She’s an amazing (and adorable) addition to our family, and we absolutely love our new fuzzy buddy! Thanks so much to Sabrina, James and everyone else at Elephant Nature Park for helping Sanchez find her forever home.
