Hello Sabrina/all,
I wanted to send y'all an update on Pinguin :)
The flight volunteer brought Pinguin to me in Portland where I was staying a couple nights with some friends. Pinguin was quickly introduced to my other dog Fiona, plus my friends' dog and two cats! Amazingly, it was a calm, happy introduction and everyone stayed calm and friendly the entire day and that night. Mostly Pinguin just wanted to sleep! Doggie jet lag ;) We went for several walks as a group and the dogs seemed to be naturally bonding. Pinguin would quiver with nerves off and on but mostly she seemed comfortable. Soon she was greeting us humans with tail wags and giving kisses.
The next day in latter afternoon, I said goodbye to my friends and their animals and loaded Fiona and Pinguin into the car. By this time I'd decided to rename Pinguin. Her name is now Zoey (Zoey Pinguin Frazier is her full name).
Zoey immediately started hyperventilating as soon as she was back in her crate and I started the car. It looks like she has travel fatigue from the long journey. She continued to be extremely stressed the entire car ride to my new house in Coos Bay on the Oregon coast. When we got home just after dark, she was completely on edge and hyper vigilant and nervous.
The hyper vigilance and nerves and quivering remained well into the next day. However, I spent all of Labor Day at home with her and Fiona and just like in Portland, I saw that she gains confidence quickly. I also saw that Fiona is showing Zoey the ropes of how life at our home works- from morning potty break to late afternoon long walk to dinner time to bedtime potty break. Zoey has not had one single potty accident and hasn't shown any disposition to chew on things or engage in disruptive behavior indoors. In general, she's a sweet and docile little dog.
Although Zoey has basically been transported to a whole new planet -she's used to elephants trumpeting but got nervous when we walked past a high school football practice- I am confident that with time and patience the three of us are going to be a tight knit and very happy little pack! The past two mornings I have awoke to find two warm cozy dogs curled up on the bed with me. It's a wonderful feeling :)
Thank you for all the lifesaving work you do, for elephants, dogs, cats, water buffalo, and even humans! You're a beacon of light and positive change for the world and a true inspiration to strive to live a more enlightened life.
