Alfie
During my time volunteering at ENP dogs back in 2013 I met little Alfie. I hadn’t planned on adopting a dog while I was out there but after a few weeks of him following me to breakfast and waiting outside the clinic for us to finish I gave up, who could resist that cute face. So I sat with Darrick to ask if it was possible to adopt Alfie. And so the process began. It was to take three months as blood samples had to be sent to the UK to clear him of rabies. In the meantime I had to return home. He was supposed to arrive in January but there was the Bangkok riots and it was deemed unsafe to travel. He finally started his journey on 7th March 2014 from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with Carolina. I was so pleased Carolina made the first part of his journey with him as she thought so much if him and we had become good friends. For the second part of his journey I had a flight volunteer who flew with Alfie and two other dogs to Amsterdam they caught the ferry to Harwich.
On the 10th March 2014 Alfie arrived in the UK. I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have done. He brings me so much happiness. We have been attending training classes to work on his recall. Apart from that I couldn’t ask for anymore from him. He is growing in confidence all the time. The trust he has in me is unbelievable.
As no-one knows his full history it’s hard to understand why certain things unnerve him. Sometimes when we walk down alley ways he gets frightened, and he hates sticks and poles etc. I have learnt to adjust to him and reassure him everything is okay, with time he is getting better.
He is best friends with my Mums dog Rosie, they both come to work with me and play all day together. Alfie has started to come bike riding with us and happily trots alongside me. He is a complete joy.
It has been over a year now since Alfie arrived in the UK and I wouldn’t change a thing. He is truly amazing
